baby booties

I started knitting this past summer. I find the action of the needles very soothing. And, we all know how I need another hobby to keep me busy.

I stopped at Black Sheep Wool Co. on a Saturday and asked for wool for baby booties. Black Sheep is a nice shop close to downtown Salt Lake City. The folks there are friendly and have been willing to entertain my ignorance and silly questions. The owner even managed to debug my purl -- I was wrapping clockwise when I ought to have been wrapping widdershins. I think.

I was shown to three varieties of yarn in a rainbow of pastel colors. Down at the bottom of the washable merino was the perfect charcoal grey. I grabbed a skein, some needles and some more peruvian wool.

When I got to the counter, the owner said, "You did say you were making baby booties, right?"

"Yes."

"That is certainly outside the box."

"How do you mean?"

"Well, the grey," she said. "It's not typical for babies."

"There's another color other than grey?"

"Black and white for certain," she said.

"Just shades of grey," I replied.

She thought for a moment, "I really have to have dark green."

I nodded, "I'll give you the green, even if it is just dirty grey."
